80 mins - Soviet Union 1929 - Silent Cinema Director: Kote Mikaberidze Starring: Aleksandre Takaishvili, Bella Chernova and Evgeniy Ovanov Dublin International Film Festival in partnership with Triskel Arts Centre presents this special screening of CHEMI BEBIA featuring live accompaniment from Meg Morley. In this hilarious no-holds-barred Georgian satire, a hopelessly lazy paper-pusher tries to get his job back to avoid the wrath of his wife, by looking for a ‘grandmother’ – an influential bureaucrat who can provide a recommendation letter. Mikaberidze’s masterpiece exposes the alienation of the modern workspace and is as relevant today as it was in 1929. A gloriously imaginative firework of a film, banned for almost 50 years, this silent film was recently restored and screened at the 2024 edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna. Meg Morley is one of the UK’s pre-eminent silent films accompanists and has been playing alongside silent films since 2016.
